Come take a video tour of my chicken coop and run!
It's been awhile since I've shared a peek inside my chicken coop and attached run, so I thought I would take you on a chicken coop and run video tour today!
When we moved to Maine from Virginia in the summer of 2015, we took most of our chickens and ducks with us, but of course had to leave our two coops and huge, 1600 square foot run.
It was hard to leave our little farm in Virginia behind, but we do love living in Maine.
But that meant our flock needed a new home once we got here. I built my first two coops, well, built the first one and converted a lean-to into our second coop. And a friend and I built our original run.
I really wanted something safe and secure for our chickens and ducks here in Maine since the weather is so extreme and also we are surrounded by woods that are full of fox, coyotes, fisher cats, and even bobcats.
Chicken Coop and Run VIDEO Tour!
So we decided to go with a walk-in style shed coop for both the chickens and ducks and then a modest 18x40 covered run attached to the coop.
When the coop was first delivered, it looked out of place, but the landscaping I planted around it grew in fast and now it looks like it's been there forever!
Over the course of the next few years, I've redone pretty much the whole inside, building new roosting bars that are removable and new set of nesting boxes, installing shiplap on the interior walls...
We built the chicken run ourselves. It's about 18x40. We used 1/2" and 1" welded wire on the top and sides, and sunk fencing into the ground to prevent digging predators. We secured the fence posts in cement for added stability.
For those who have asked, we chose Benjamin Moore Galapagos Green to paint the untreated wood, so it matched the trim on our coop.
